Medical Malpractice Task Force Became Task Farce
New York politics are notorious for games and power politics tactics. So its not surprising that in recent medical malpractice news that The Times Union reports:
A task force set up to help fix New York’s medical malpractice system was nothing but a “sham” that fell apart as special interests tried to profit from their positions on the panel, some members say.
Insiders say hospital representatives pushed for legal changes that would have benefited them to the detriment of patients hurt by bad doctors, while lawyers wanted the state to lift some of the caps on their cut of malpractice awards.
Joanne Doroshow, a task force member who represents the Center for Justice and Democracy, said the atmosphere became so bitter that eventually the panel stopped meeting in December.
Unfortunately, our best chance at medical malpractice reform may have just passed New York by. What a tragedy, which means only New York’s collective health with suffer.
